How Rangers loanee Mason Munn has already caused major Dumbarton shake-up

Rangers loanee Mason Munn hasn't needed to play a minute for Dumbarton and he's already moving up the depth chart.

The 20-year-old completed a season-long loan switch to the Scottish League Two side earlier this week.

He's only ever made one competitive appearance for Rangers, and his first-team chances at Ibrox are hanging on by a thread as such.

It's crucial then that the Northern Ireland youth international makes a success of his time with Dumbarton.

However, Frank McKeown's side already has a healthy contingent of goalkeepers for Munn to compete with.

But the arrival of the Rangers talent has already had a significant impact on the career of one Dumbarton shot-stopper.

What has Dumbarton goalkeeper Harry Broun done after Mason Munn signing?

Prior to Munn joining the Sons this week, McKeown had four senior goalkeepers at his disposal.

Harry Broun, Jack McConnell and Aidan Rice have all made competitive appearances this season, whilst Arran Crawford has been in the matchday squad.

The former of these, Broun, will not provide any further competition for Munn this season, however.

As confirmed by Dumbarton on Friday evening, Broun has made the decision to step back from his playing career.

McKeown explained Broun's reasoning via Dumbarton's Instagram, saying: "Harry wasn’t sure if he wanted to continue in football over the summer...

"With Mason (Munn) now joining the club he feels the time is right to take a step away from playing to focus on life away from football.

"I was keen to keep him to challenge for the number one shirt, but we had an honest discussion during the week and I fully respect his decision and his honesty with us."

So, what has McKeown said about Munn, and why does it suggest that Rangers still have a clear first-team plan for him moving forward?

What is Munn "determined" to achieve with Dumbarton?

In the shape of summer signing Ivor Pandur, Rangers appear to have found their number one goalkeeper of the future.

The 26-year-old Croatian has made a strong start to life at Ibrox, and it will take some effort to usurp him over the coming years.

Rangers, however, would appear to believe that Munn still holds a solid chance of at least pushing for a significant role under Derek McInnes moving forward..

Speaking via Dumbarton's website, McKeown said of Munn: "Mason is a player that Rangers’ coaching staff have extremely high hopes for.

"It speaks volumes about the environment we have here that we are being trusted again to support their best talent through the next phase of his career.

“He gained vital experience last season during his loan spells, but now he’s determined to be a number one and get regular games under his belt.

"Competition for the number one jersey will be fierce, which can only help all of our keepers in their development.

“Mason has all the attributes and attitude to go far in the game and myself and the coaching team are excited to work with him.”
