Charlie Adam reacts to official Old Firm news he's heard ahead of Rangers vs Celtic - 'Has to stop'
The Gers play host to their fierce rivals at Ibrox on Sunday in the quarter-finals of the Scottish League Cup.
A week later on 20 September, Derek McInnes takes his side to Parkhead for the first Scottish Premiership Old Firm game of the season.
However, once again there will be no away supporters allowed to attend either game following a decision by the SFA.
Back in March, supporters invaded the pitch at Ibrox following the Scottish Cup quarter-final Old Firm clash, which Celtic won 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw.
The repercussions of those unsavoury scenes are still being felt, with former Rangers man Charlie Adam reacting to the news.
Charlie Adam airs frustrations after SFA Old Firm decision
There have been disputes between the two Glasgow rivals over away-fan allocations for the best part of a decade.
Games between the two teams have been anyway between zero and 800 away supporters in attendance.
An agreement had been reached for both clubs to get five per cent allocations, but that decision was reconsidered after the clashes in March.
Rangers offered Celtic around 300 tickets as opposed to roughly 2,500, but that was rejected by the Bhoys.
The SFA consequentely intervened and ruled there would be no away fans at all this season, stating the decision would allow more time for considerations to be made for future allocations.
Former Rangers midfielder Adam, speaking live on talkSPORT to Gabby Agbonlahor, said he agreed with the decision.
Adam said: "It's frustrating Gabs, but when idiots want to spoil it then ultimately the sfa have to make a big decision, it's been going on too long, and it's important that this has to stop, unfortunately supporters will lose out if a small minority of people want to act like that because it was not good for Scottish football on that day.
"I think at the time the police could do more, I think understanding that you know there's a penalty shoot-out, and you've got time during the end of the game to the end of the shoot-out to organise more police.
"And you have to think 'alright, if this goes to penalties, either or it's going to look right'. So, I think the police have to do more as well but ultimately the sfa have to make a decision, I', glad they made the decision that this small minority have made it hard for everyone else.
"The Old Firm with fans is the best in the world, very fortunate to have played in it myself and we'd love full allocations if we could at both stadiums, because they are brilliant, the atmosphere's amazing
"But we have to get to a point where these people who are spoiling our game and how it looks are not good. Let's see how the game goes, but it's going to be a cracker, I think there's a lot of pressure on it for both teams."
Old Firm loses something with SFA decision
You can understand why the SFA has taken the decision it has.
Ultimately, no matter how intense the rivalry, we cannot have a repeat of the scenes we saw in March.
Having said that, it does feel like a better solution could have been found than just merely a blanket ban.
The Old Firm is a special, special game that is viewed by millions the world over.
And not having away fans in attendance does take away from the occasion somewhat.
Hopefully, the relevant parties can find a long-term solution to make sure the atmosphere matches the occasion in future.
