Steven Gerrard stance on Kevin Thelwell emerges as Rangers appointment all but confirmed

Steven Gerrard looks set to return to Rangers after Russell Martin’s sacking at Ibrox.

The Liverpool icon has a mixed reputation among the Gers fans, but made history when he ended the 10-year wait for a league title in G51.

Gerrard could be appointed at Ibrox within hours, with Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe holding a positive meeting with the Englishman in London.

Kevin Thelwell isn’t the most popular figure at Ibrox, and it looks like the new sporting director may be butting heads with the Liverpool legend soon.

Steven Gerrard willing to work with Kevin Thelwell at Rangers

Gerrard would want to have a decisive say in the Gers’ transfers, according to talkSPORT.

The news outlet reports on 10 October that the Light Blues are close to reaching an agreement with the Englishman to fill the Ibrox vacancy.

It’s been claimed that the Liverpool icon has no issues working with Thelwell, but the two may need to work more collaboratively.

In the summer, it appeared that the former Everton chief had significant influence over the Glaswegian outfit’s signings, with most new players coming from English football.

Martin and Thelwell may have differed over Youssef Chermiti’s signing, as the former Southampton boss wasn’t particularly keen on the Portugal Under-21 international.

It remains to be seen how the sporting director will feel about the prospect of working alongside Gerrard, who appears to want more control over transfers.

Gerrard’s appointment may see Thelwell depart Ibrox, with the former Everton chief’s influence likely to diminish after the Liverpool icon arrives in G51.

Supporters wouldn’t have an issue seeing the back of the sporting director after overseeing an underwhelming recruitment strategy at Rangers.

It can be argued that apart from Djeidi Gassama, none of the summer signings have lived up to expectations at the Gers.

While Gerrard generates conflicting feelings among the Glaswegian outfit’s fanbase, a lot of supporters just want to see stability return to Ibrox.
