Patrick Stewart must take responsibility after Russell Martin comment
Russell Martin is facing calls to be sacked following Rangers’ 2-0 defeat to Hearts.
As pressure mounts on Martin, Rangers fans are growing increasingly furious at senior figures across the club, including Andrew Cavenagh and Patrick Stewart.
Cavenagh continues to have full faith in Martin, with fans likely to turn their fury towards his direction of the chairman if Martin isn’t relieved from his duties.
However, Stewart’s role in appointing. Martin hasn’t been scrutinised enough.

Patrick Stewart must take accountability for Russell Martin appointment
Speaking on the Record Rangers podcast on 16 September, Daily Record journalist Scott McDermott expects more from Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart.
“I think Stewart needs to put his head above the parapet because he’s the CEO, he’s the guy who’s running the club on a day-to-day basis, and ultimately, Russell Martin is his appointment.
“He needs to explain why Martin was the ‘outstanding candidate’, explain why it’s taken so long for Rangers to win a league game, and I think that’s the least the fans deserve.
“For too long, people have hid at Ibrox, people don’t want to take accountability for decisions.
“Patrick Stewart has to stop making bad decisions, and he has to come out and say something.”
Under Russell Martin, Rangers are:
- Nine points behind Celtic
- Playing in the Europa League instead of the Champions League
- Winless in the William Hill Premiership
When Martin was appointed as Rangers manager, Stewart consistently praised the former Southampton manager’s ambition and leadership, labelling him a ‘standout’ during the application process.
Stewart became the Rangers CEO in December 2024 and has since worked with three different managers in the space of nine months.
It has been a turbulent start to his time at Rangers, and Stewart, alongside Kevin Thelwell, continues to support Martin.
As matters get worse at Ibrox, Stewart must apologise to the fans for getting it so disastrously wrong with Martin’s appointment, as this current Rangers squad displays no signs of ambition or leadership five games into the domestic season.
Andrew Cavenagh in attendance for must-win game vs Hibs
Rangers take on Hibs in the Premier Sports Cup quarter-final, with Martin needing a win to alleviate any sort of pressure.
Cavenagh will be in attendance for the match against Hibs and will see for himself why Rangers fans are so angry at the moment.
Rangers have won the Premier Sports Cup a record 28 times, and narrowly lost to Celtic on penalties in last year’s final.
Rangers are in a full-blown crisis, and Saturday’s game against Hibs could change the minds of Stewart, Cavenagh, and Thelwell that Martin is the right man to lead the club forward.
