Tactical Profile
Explosive Pace
What attracted Rangers to Gassama was the explosive pace, and ability to dribble directly at speed. When on form he can be a real asset in one-on-one attacking situations due to his raw speed.
Great in the Transition
Where Gassama can really excel is turning defence into attack. His work in the transitions, and ability to turn out of danger, can be a real asset when Rangers are looking to counter-attack.
More End Product Needed
Gassama’s raw ability has never really been in doubt, but he has severely lacked in consistency. Two goals and three assists in the Scottish Premiership this season is really quite a meagre return for a player with the quality he possesses.
Djeidi Gassama: Maddeningly inconsistent but Rangers have huge potential in their midst
Little was known by Rangers fans when they plucked Djeidi Gassama from cash-strapped Sheffield Wednesday in July 2025 for a fee in the region of £2.5million. The electric winger made a brilliant start to life at Ibrox, but – just like many others in the dismal tenure of Russell Martin – struggled to kick-on. An exciting talent for sure, but maddeningly inconsistent. And yet, the Gers certainly have a player with untapped potential on their hands. Villarreal and Monaco were sniffing around in the winter transfer window, thought Danny Rohl made it clear he didn’t want to sell a player he had got to know during his time as head coach of the Owls. There is a sense that much more is still to come from a player with outdoubted talent, it just remains to be seen if that potential will be realised at Ibrox or elsewhere.
What did Djeidi Gassama say about father figure Rohl?
Gassama had already played for Rohl at Wednesday, but the two reuniting was of course a little coincidental as it was actually Martin who brought him to Ibrox.
But Gassama had plenty of good things to say about Rohl when he first arrived, telling Rangers TV about how he views him almost like a father figure.
He said: “It was good. He is like a father to me. He helped me a lot.
“When I was at Sheffield Wednesday, I worked with him for 18 months and he gave me a lot of advice, and especially last season I had a good year because of him.
“He taught me how to play my position on the pitch. He loves players to fight for the team and there were a lot of other things – even off the park he helped me a lot to settle in.
